This CD comprises the first two albums recorded by Luis Di Matteo in Germany — TANGO CONTEMPORÁNEO and LE DERNIER TANGO. By the time DIE METTEO first visited Germany in 1983, he had already recorded six LPs under his own name and participated in several other projects in Uruguay. His German/European debut was so successful that he would soon return for a more comprehensive tour. Following the concerts, Luis Di Matteo recorded his first album for JARO. The compositions for TANGO CONTEMPORÁNEO had all originated in Montevideo, and several of them had also been recorded there — using similar instrumental constellations — for the LP LATITUDE 55. LE DERNIER TANGO on the other hand, released in 1985, contains three works composed by Luis Di Matteo in Detmold (eastern Westphalia/Germany), the city which was to serve as his European base for a number of years.
Biography
LUIS DE MATTEO was born in 1934. He began his musical education at the conservatory in his native city Montevideo, Uruguay. His studies of the bondoneon led him to Buenos Aires in the late 1950s where he met Astor Piazzolla for the first time. In 1962 he founded his first ensemble and began recording with his own formation as well as with other musicians. In 1980 he gave his first performances in Europe where he has been touring regularly. Between 1983 and 1986 he cooperated with the music conservatory of Detmold, Germany. In 1987 he wrote the music for the Swedish filmproduction Black Dawn/Los Duenos del Silencio. He took the opportunity of working and recording with a string orchestra for the first time in 1990/91. In the Russian city of Uljanowsk (Lenin's birthplace) he recorded compositions of his own with the chamber soloists of the Uljanowsk National Symphony Orchestra. (CD production 1991: DEL NUEVO CICLO JARO 4155-2). The premier of his latest major composition CONCERTO PARA CONTRABAJO Y ORCHSTRA DE CUERDOS (Concert for doublebass and string orchstra), performed by the Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra, took place in Montevideo in the summer of 1995. In the fall of 1997 he starts performing his compositions for bandoneon and string quartet live in Europe.
