FARLANDERS

Feat. Inna Zhelannaya and Sergey Starostin.

Formed in 1994 by Inna Zhelannaya, this band mainly drew from the legendary Russian rock band Alliance from the early 90s, bringing along Sergey Starostin, quite known abroad as a bright musician, and bassist Sergey Kalachev. Inna‘s powerful and perfectly pitched voice, her haunting texts, combined with superb instrumentalists makes their music uncomparable with any other bands from Russia. It is a blend of hit melodies, kicking rythms, vocal power, influence of Russian, Jewish, oriental traditions, web of clarinet and folkreed lines. She was named as one of the three top Russian female vocalists in 1993 and in 1996. Now she is recognized as one of the top female vocalists in Russia.

In 1989 Inna began her musical career working with the popular Russian rock band Alliance, which enjoyed a cult following in early 90s in the Soviet Union. At the same time Inna became a fan of the folk songs and tunes, performed by one of the best Russian folk and jazz musicians, singer and woodwind instrumentalist Sergey Starostin. Soon Starostin also joined Alliance, bringing a strong ethnic element to the band‘s music. In 1991 they released an LP, Made in White, which subsequently appeared on CD. Made in White (BSA Records) included four of Inna Zhelannaya’s own songs for which she also performed the lead vocals. Later, in 1994, Made in White was recognized as Best Rock and Pop act in the East (annual award of Radio France International). From 1990-92 Alliance participated in many international music festivals, including “Rock for Clear Water ’92”, toured Sweden (1990) and France (1991). While with Alliance, Inna participated in many international music projects. In 1992 American singer and guitarist Jon Humboldt Gates came to Moscow to work on his Soviet-American project, Time Zone. Inna appeared as vocalist on the CD, Last Nations, which came out of this project. That same year she was involved in a second project with the famous Norwegian performer Mari Boine who came to Moscow to work with Alliance.

In 1994 Inna Zhelannaya put together her own band, drawing from the former members of Alliance the bassist Sergey Kalachev and Sergey Starostin. She immediately began rehearsing with this new band and preparing material for her solo debut album. In 1996 her CD Vodorosl (Seeweed) was released by the Moscow based label General Records. This album was cited by the Russian press as one of the best releases of the year and up to now continues to enjoy wide critical acclaim and commercial success. That year, one of Inna’s songs from this album, “Only You” was included on the “One World” compilation CD (Putumayo World Music label). This album included recordings by performers such as Peter Gabriel, Youssou N’Dour, Gypsy Kings, Bob Marley, Toni Childs, Johnny Klegg and others. In conjunction with this release, Zhelannaya and her band successfully toured the USA, participating in the “One World Festival” in Washington DC (together with Tony Childs, Capercaillie, Majek Fashek and Kotoja), giving concerts in New York, other East Coast states and the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. In 1997 Inna and her band performed at the annual Music Festival in Gent, Belgium.

Inna’s actual band includes very strong and creative musicians. Sergey Starostin (traditional and folk woodwind instruments, vocals) is quite known in the world as a bright musician from Moscow Art Trio and a lead singer of a joint project with Bulgarian voices ANGELITE and Huun-Huur-Tu. The other musicians are Sergey ‘Grebstel’ Kalachev (fretless six string bass guitar), Sergey Klevensky (traditional and folk woodwind instruments) and Pavel Timofeev (drums).

1. I Will GATHER GRASS 4.59 (I. Zhelannaya/I. Zhelannaya)
I’m not gathering grass to cast a spell
Or to mix a potion, or to plant in the garden
I’m gathering grass taller than my head
Which shields me from vicious rumours
I’ll cross the river with you
Chained firmly to your side
Along the damp path wet with the golden dew
I follow in your footsteps, you follow my tears,
I’ll cross the river with you
I’m drunk from the water I drank from your hands
I fly with the wind and yell at the sun

It’s just like you wanted, it’ll be just as I want

2. FLY 4.09 (S. Kalachev/E. Vokhmyanin)
Close my eyes with your hands, if the sun rises,
Throw your stones into my garden,
And I begin to fly with a broken wing
Fly with me
Fly with me
Fly with me, and we’ll die together
And we’ll die together
My heart will break the chains, following an invisible sign,
And who remains – remains in dreams,
So I spread my wings, to the East
Fly with me
Fly with me
Fly with me, and we’ll die together
And we’ll die together

Fly high with me, do fly

3. TWILIGHT 4.11 (Traditional)
A pale dawn was burning,
She sang freely, she sang without fetters,
She was called a sweet name
A pale dawn was burning
She plaited her hair, braided it up,
And circled the braids about her head
A plae dawn was burning
Her poor heart was wildly beating,
Waiting for the morning’s light
A pale dawn was burning
Her tears flowed, her tears poured

This pretty girl did not wait for a wedding veil.

4. A SONG WITHOUT WORDS 4.11 (S. Kalachev/S. Kalachev)

5. KEEP SILENT 2.58 (I. Zhelannaya/I. Zhelannaya)
Above the clouds, the sky above
The name of yours’ arising,
I won’t see, won’t ever hear,
The wind won’t ever sing.
And obediently with the tender heart
I’m catching well-aimed arrows
Without blaming, with no hope
I love you.
Calmer than rivers, lower than grass I am – a shadow in the night,
With a strict whip
I’m touching the heart,

Hush, silly one.

6. EASTER SONG 5.47 (Traditional)
Walking down the road so wide – Christ has risen, the Son of God
On the Grass so green, so soft – Christ has risen, the Son of God
The pilgrims make haste – Christ has risen, the Son of God
The fasting pilgrims – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Were walking and shuffling slowly – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Overburdened and longsuffering – Christ has risen, the Son of God
They arrive to a court – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Whose court t’is on the hill – Christ has risen, the Son of God
T’is Thy court up the hill – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Whose court t’is most richly appointed – Christ has risen, the Son of God
T’is thy court the most richly appointed – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Arise early good Christians – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Don your finest robes – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Light the tallow brightly – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Hasten to the stable – Christ has risen, the Son of God
You shall find the son of God there – Christ has risen, the Son of God
The Son of God is born – Christ has risen
Show unto us this precious gift – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Suffer this gift to us – Christ has risen, the Son of God
Join us pilgrims to awaken the dogs – Christ has risen, the Son of God

To awaken the dogs and stir up the dust – Christ has risen, the Son of God

7. BLOK 4.45 (E.Kudyakova/A.Blok)
Lucid wind is calming down,
Evening grey is coming here,
The raven sat on a pine-tree,
And touched a sleepy string
In the strange land, land of darkness,
When you will remember me,
My simple love you will remember,
Will you mourn in your dream?
Don’t chase away the ghost
That’s flying by, gentle and simple,
If you will be, my beloved,
Happy with another girl
Well, God bless you, evening’s come,
Rapid birds are flying low,
Storm is coming,

Night looks right into your eyes

8. NOTHERN DANCES 2.56 (I. Zhelannaya/I. Zhelannaya)
It’s not the time to dance or sing,
Or cast cunning eyes about,
Nor is it the time to weave a web of
Unnecessary words
It’s time to pick up golden stones
It’s a waste of time –
To try to tame me
Why should I, a young lass, be shackled –
I’ll fling my arms wide to the wind

It’s time to dance the nothern dances

9. MIRROR / SPIEGEL 6.50 (S.Kalachev/E.Vokhmyanin)
It’s the new moon and I pace in the soft candlelight.
The mirror again reveals my fate in the dream of endless nights.
The mirror whispers its own secrets to me, spinning me on its edge.
It penetrates deep to my soul with its burning stare and I realize
I don’t want to know what will be without you.
I don’t want to I see what will happen without you.
It’s the full moon and I pace in the soft candlelight.
With an ancient incantation of evil I dispel my misfortune
Here is my blood on the needle
I pricked my finger,
I’m not afraid, I will not give up, turn around, or perish
I will not let the pain rip apart my world
Nor let the fire cast its long shadows on my life.
I only want to know who’s waiting for me,
Who’s against me, who’s behind my back
The sweet deception of a lie and the gentle seduction of death
The glass becomes muddled.
The mirror whispers its own secrets to me, spinning me on its edge.
It penetrates deep to my soul with its burning stare and I realize
I don’t want to know what will be without you.

I don’t want to see what will happen without you.

10. THROUGH THE ORCHARD / DURCH DEN OBSTGARTEN 4.25 (Traditional)
A quail flew through the cherry orchard
God sent to you, Pelageyushka, the one you wanted
God sent to you, Alekseevna, the one you desired
Through the pears and past the apples the footpath ran
No one walks down that little path any more
Except rich merchants and gentle nobles
Merchant-nobles, noble-merchants, Pelageyushka’s brothers
They prized their sister, they were proud of their sister
Our dear sister, Pelageyushka Alekseevna, she sat for a while

And vanquished her evil enemies.

11. GREY EYES / GRAUE AUGEN 3.20 (I.Zhelannaya/I.Zhelannaya)
I’m weaving my crafty net of lace
Stroking my sleeves as an incantation
I’m crafting a slipknot of silk but
I’m not telling who I plan to catch
You can’t get away from me, grey eyes
Don’t let your heart wander far
Silver is never covered with gold
I’m weaving my crafty net of lace
Stroking my sleeves as an incantation
It’s all for you, all for you, grey eyes

It’s all for you, all for you

12. LULLABY / WIEGENLIED 4.27 (I.Zhelannaya, S.Kalachev / I.Zhelannaya, A.Slizunov)
It’s not a morning for plaiting fair hair in long flaxen braids
It’s not a day for celebrating, for donning jewels or pearls
It’s not an evening for baking pies or setting a festive table
Tonight I won’t see the sky until the cock’s crow
Tonight I’m going to cry myself out before morning breaks

Tonight I’m going to sing silent lullabies to my mother

13. POPPY / MOHNBLUME 6.42 (Traditional)
There’s a poppy on a hill,
There’s a nutty under hill
Let us girls
Make a circle,
Clap our hands,
Won’t let the laddie
Out of dance.
