Description

As prelude to the New Year 2015, SMWE presents its newest CD, The Inner Draft. Once again SMWE captures and transmits the live spirit of profound jazz and irresistible groove momentum into listener’s homes!

Improvisation, the simple joy of playing coupled with a finely-tuned ensemble that is eloquently expressed on this CD which can be described as an extraordinary work of art in its own right. Exceptional tempi alternate with balladic themes. With self-compositions from the band leader, Stephan-Max Wirth, the tracks tell their own story and forge a bridge – similar to a suite – representing today’s sense of life. The CD is about being in the here and now where the slow movements beg the listener to pause for a moment and to reflect. Indeed, accompanying each track, the composer offers his own reflections in the artistically designed digipack of the CD. For example, an aphorism for the opening track, Space in Time, describes the center of action: “We use space and time and flowing time is our space. We make music.” The Inner Draft covers many aspects of modern life, from the merciless hunt for money (Trash Cash) to the “Happiness within the moment” (Sleeping Child). Other phrases such as “A Journey into urban subconciousness” leave one with much latitude for thought. For the last track, Stephan-Max Wirth has created a fulminant ending with the piece Moorsoldaten (Peat Bog Soldiers). It is an understated but intense arrangement of Rudi Goguel’s composition, which he created while in the concentration camp Börgermoor. The band leader thus sets a powerful musical memorandum for this part of German history.

The musicians in the ensemble that join the band leader are not only accompanists but composers themselves. Together they represent a consistent lineup that is also reflected in the nuanced band name which has been changed from the Stephan-Max Wirth Ensemble to the Stephan-Max Wirth Experience. With The Inner Draft Stephan-Max Wirth has reached a new high point by implementing his own compositions on an amazingly high musical level. Listening, one can feel how the pieces were tailored to his instruments soprano and tenor saxophone as well as his accompanying musicians. Jaap Berends (electric guitar) uses the electronic range to undermine musical atmospheres and to create a colorful imagery for the compositions. Bub Boelens (fretless electric bass) still forms the secure basis together with Florian Hoefnagels (drums) who shines in a ballad with his multifarious play using sticks, drumsticks, brooms and others. The collaboration creates extraordinary moments for your ears like the unison between acoustic saxophone and electric guitar where one asks: “Where does one instrument end and where does the other start?” Instruments assume new roles: “Who is accompanying while the other tells the story?” Limits are dissolved and merge into one entity. In short, it is an experience.

The listeners have the opportunity to experience all this themselves while being able to always discover something new, something unknown – this CD is potentially addictive. It doesn’t only offer great Jazz listening but also the pursuit of happiness!
