Description

With their new CD “Le Grand Spectacle,” the Henning Wolter Trio has succeeded in creating an absolutely exceptional album, serving up a towering overall concept. The subject matter of the Tour de France merges so entertainingly and cleverly with the jazz compositions that it’s almost like listening to a radio play.

Pianist and composer Henning Wolter tells the story of his journey to the legendary cycle race in France, linking the sounds of cyclists whizzing past, cheering spectators, French loudspeaker announcements and many more sound bites specially recorded for this production with highly expressive, fast-paced numbers. The clearly associative imagery thus created tells stories of winners, losers and of an enthusiastic public carried away by the exhilarating atmosphere of the race.

In appearance, too, the CD design is emblazoned with the national couleurs of the French flag – bleu, blanc, rouge. The collaged photographs artfully mirror the musical content of this CD. Aptly, sport journalist Herbert Watterott recalls his memories of this “Grand Spectacle” in the booklet text.

For the montage experiment to work, one needs strong and trusted partners like Lucien Matheeuwsen (bass) and Marcel van Cleef (drums/percussion) at one’s side. After many years of collaboration with Henning Wolter, each of them is able to illuminate the finest nuances of his pieces and respond with suspenseful introductions and solos. Pianist Henning Wolter stands compellingly in the forefront, skilfully alternating filigreed, melodious passages with rhythmically percussive chord structures. With joy, versatility and humour, the passionate cyclist puts his favourite sport in the spotlight of this CD while animating his seasoned colleagues to join him. Listeners are instantly drawn into the wake of events and find themselves on the sidelines of the routes in the French mountains – thrown right into the midst of the human bustle.

Of course, the theme of tempo and speed, both of a musical and athletic nature, repeat throughout, for instance in “Breath!” or “Downhill”. It demands a combination of courage, technique and dexterity, only the sum of which can lead to the finish line. Yet balladry and lyrical moments also swell in the quieter pieces, such as the composition “Pyrénées.” In this song, one utterly senses the beauty of the French landscape; the powerful and majestic tranquillity of the mountains amidst the surrounding commotion.
