Gone to the dogs

Since 1981, JARO has been successfully producing and presenting music from outside the mainstream and all corners of the earth. “Incwadi Yothando” featuring the South African Phikelela Sakhula Zulu Choir, “Tasca Beat” by OqueStrada of Portugal and New Yorker Hazmat Modine’s eagerly awaited second CD “Cicada” as well as “The Arabian Passion” by Sarband are just a few examples of our internationally recognized productions in the genres of classical, jazz and world. There’s an advantage to being different, because we go out and find interesting sounds for you, which would otherwise remain undiscovered.

PORTUGAL | OQUESTRADA – „Oxalá Te Veja

CD: »Tasca Beat« JARO 4295-2

The Portuguese formation from Lisbon is a new discovery and – as is already the case in Portugal – is going to take Europe by storm. We recommend gathering an impression on YouTube. The Portuguese CD is a Sony production; we’ve signed a contract for the rest of Europe. The band has been in existence for seven years and is now presenting its long-perfected premier CD.

POLAND | WARSAW VILLAGE BAND – „1,5 h

CD: »Infinity« JARO 4289-2

Probably Eastern Europe’s most interesting ensemble, last year the Warsaw Village Band came out with »Infinity«, a wonderful CD which met with wildly enthusiastic response, among other things being elected by one of the largest online magazines in the U.S., Popmatters, as the best world music album of 2009.

USA | HAZMAT MODINE – „2.47“*

CD: »Cicada« JARO 4292-2

Following three years of intensive concert activity, Hazmat Modine is picking up the thread of their highly praised debut album »Bahamut«. 2.47* is one of the tracks on the new production (*here in a recording made for the Japanese feature film Tokyo Joe). Illustrious guests such as the Kronos Quartet, Huun-Huur-Tu, Natalie Merchant and the Gangbé Brass Band all participate in the second album. The band will also be publishing a photo book of their 2008/09 European tour.

SOUTH AFRICA/NL/DE | PHIKELELA SAKHULA ZULU CHOIR & PILI PILI – „Courage/Isi Bindi

CD: »Incwadi Yothando« JARO 4225-2

Several years ago, Smangele Khumalo of South Africa joined Pili Pili to record the enthralling album »Incwadi Yothando«. This CD will be re-released in 2010. A felicitous fusion of European jazz and the music of the Durban township.

BELGIUM | TAM ECHO TAM – „Yvan

CD: »Dawn« JARO 4293-2

This Belgian a-cappella formation offers vocal music to meet the highest standards. Their eclectic repertoire consists of elements of jazz, gospel, African music, French chanson and American folk-pop. Dominated by refreshing humour, elegance and nostalgic lover stories, their compositions aim toward the greatest possible precision of melody, timing and interpretation.

POLAND | KAROLINA GLAZER – „Minute 47

CD: »Normal« JARO 4296-2

Karoline Glazer considered a rising star on the Polish jazz vocal firmament. Her voice has a four-octave range, and when she sings she defies every »beautiful, blond girl« style. We deliberately chose the experimental track Minute 47. Listen to more of Karolina Glazer!

GEORGIA | THE SHIN – „Gelino

CD: »Black Sea Fire« JARO 4279-2

The Shin, winners of the German world music competition »Creole 2009«. One of The Shin’s new projects is »Black Sea Fire«, music from all over the Mediterranean. Our sampler features »Gelino«, the last words spoken by the prodigal son as he sets out on his journey. A traditional song with roots in the Laz (Southern Caucasian) language.

BULGARIA/TUVA/RUSSIA | THE BULGARIAN VOICES ANGELITE &

HUUN-HUUR-TU & MOSCOW ART TRIO– „Fly Fly My Sadness

2-CD-Set: »Legend« JARO 4300/01-2

The title is one of the core pieces of the double CD »Legend« recorded live in Belgrade. If a »world music symphony« is possible at all, then with this programme developed over a period of ten years, and as much at home in the classical genre as it is in world music.

Here a listener’s commentary: »If you feel as though your spirit is broken and nearly dead, listen to this CD. If you think you have no imagination, no more sense of wonder and awe at the world around you, listen to this CD. If you want to feel closer to God/Nature, closer to your fellow human beings – or simply more closely in tune to yourself – listen to this CD. You will find yourself plugged back in. If you are in any way, ever, moved by beautiful music, do not overlook this unbelievable music!« Matthew Brown, Chicago

LEBANON/GERMANY | SARBAND – „Es ist vollbracht!“**

CD: »Die Arabische Passion« JARO 4294-2

J.S. Bach’s passions are here newly conceived; their Baroque spirit newly interpreted in the lively traditions of Arabian music and jazz, as musicians of the West and Near East strive for an encounter in the music of Bach. »The Arabian Passion« is a musical petition for peace.

CD in slip case without booklet.
